How to Enable USB Debugging on Android Device


If you are using an Android phone, you've probably come across the term "USB Debugging" with high frequency. Whenever you would like to root your Android device, install a custom ROM on your Android, or transfer data from Android to computer, etc. you need to enable USB debugging mode in order to connect and communicate with your Android device. So, how to enable USB debugging on your Android phone? This blog will you what is USB debugging and the ways to turn on USB debugging on various Android versions, including Android 4.2 or later, Android 3.0 to 4.1, Android 2.3 or earlier.

What is USB Debugging Mode on Android? 

Android USB Debugging Mode, also called Developer Mode in some Android versions, is to facilitate a connection between an Android device and a computer with Android SDK (Software Development Kit). When you enabled USB debugging on Android device, you will have higher level access to your Android phone or tablet. For example, you can copy newly programmed apps to Android phone via USB for testing, you can access your Android phone by running terminal commands through a computer, or take a log of your phone etc.


How to Enable USB Debugging Mode on Android Phone or Tablet? 

By default the USB debugging mode is disabled for any brand new device to avoid unintentional modifications on your Android device. And the ways to enable USB debugging mode vary from one Android version to another.


1. Android 2.0 – 2.3x 

If your Android phone is running 2.3 or earlier versions, you can enable USB debugging by clicking Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.



2. Android 3.0 – 4.1x 

If your Android phone is running 3.0 to 4.1, you can enable USB debugging by clicking Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging.


3. Android 4.2x and higher 

For the newer Android operating system like Android 4.2 or later, the Developer Options menu and USB Debugging option have been hidden.

First, you need to enable Developer Options menu on your Android device: Go to Settings > About Phone (Tablet) > Build number. Tap the Build number seven times until the "You are now a developer" note pops up.


Now you can enable USB debugging mode on your Android device: Go back to Settings and choose Developer options > USB debugging. Finally tap "OK" from the popup box.
